[Part 1: History of the SCPH-5903 Video CD model]
This model was only released exclusively in South East Asia region (Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand) back in the mid-90s between mid-1996 to 1997, it utilises the motherboard PU-16 which was exclusive for this model and it has the embedded MP-45 card that controls the VCD functionality. It was speculated that only 5,000 to 10,000 of these were made. This is an NTSC-J variant which plays your normal SCEI games only and of course it plays VCD format disc, it will not work for NTSC- U/C or PAL labelled games if the console is not modified with a mod chip.
THIS MODEL IS THE ONLY PLAYSTATION MODEL THAT COMES WITH VCD FUNCTIONALITY WHICH OTHER MODELS DO NOT HAVE and they are the only model that have white console shell (think PSONE shell colour) instead of the usual gray that other models carry. This is truly a beauty for your PlayStation collection and framing as a console collector, a must have for PlayStation enthusiasts!
Things to note about the 5903 model:
- If the console have been chipped, some games with extra piracy protection may not boot showing "software terminated" error from previous experience, this means not all games will boot.
- This console is 220V at least for it to be powered on properly, if you live in a country that runs on 100 to 110v, you will need a step up converter to generate enough power for the console to work.
